About the Mind Behind the Curtains at MirthandMenace.com

Peek beyond the veil of “Mirth and Menace” and you’ll find me, Eric Montgomery, the architect of this realm where reality bends and words weave new worlds. Think of me not just as an author but as your fellow traveler on this journey of exploration and expression. My writing serves as a conduit for the whirlwind of thoughts and fantasies that reside within, offering a therapeutic escape not just for myself, but, I hope, for you as well.

With a heart anchored in the realms of the whimsical and the eerie, and a spirit that finds solace in the rhythm of prose and poetry, I craft each piece with the intent to touch, terrify, and tantalize. “Mirth and Menace” is more than a blog; it’s a piece of my soul laid bare, inviting you to delve into the depths of my imagination.

Why Mirth and Menace?

The name ‘Mirth and Menace’ captures the dual essence of my writing. ‘Mirth’ represents joy and amusement, which you can find in the playful and whimsical elements of my poems and stories. It’s about finding lightness and laughter even in unexpected places. On the other hand, ‘Menace’ reflects the darker, more haunting themes that explore the depths of human emotion and the complexities of life. Together, these words embody the range of experiences that my writing offers: from the uplifting to the unsettling, ensuring that every reader finds something that resonates.

This balance of light and dark, joy and introspection, is at the heart of Mirth and Menace. It’s about embracing the full spectrum of storytelling, where each piece invites you to experience a range of emotions, encouraging a deeper exploration of what it means to feel and to be human.

Before Mirth and Menace, I had my “author” site on my own domain (mrericmontgomery.com). I posted my poems regularly and got a little bit of traffic. Then I started experimenting with different writing platforms, but it was always the same story—being required to spend a lot of time reading (and commenting) other writers’ work for the chance of getting my work noticed in a polluted sea of thousands of other writers.

One day, while writing, I decided my blog needed a name that matched the style of my poems and prose. At that moment, ‘Mirth and Menace’ was born.

Nothing fancy, no more cover art, just my words. Every piece I’ve crafted, from the poetic to the profound, is freely accessible without the distraction of images. It’s all about immersing you in the stories and poems themselves, inviting you to explore these creations without barriers.

I encourage you to dive deeper by leaving comments and sharing your favorite pieces with your friends and family. Your feedback and shares are a simple yet powerful way to support and spread the word about my work.

My Journey

Writing has always been my go-to therapy. My early life was chaotic, filled with criminal and violent experiences, which fueled a lot of my writing. Despite all that, I was lucky to learn from some great professionals, including a newspaper editor who taught me a lot about the craft.

As I got older, my writing evolved. At first, it was just for me. Then, when I started my journey as a business-owner, I would do all the writing for our marketing, websites, and even many of our clients. In 2020, I took the plunge and published a children’s storybook, and that opened the floodgates. By 2023, I had two poetry collections out and launched my blog, Mirth and Menace. Writing is still my therapy, but if someone enjoys what I write, that’s a bonus.

Over the past couple of years, my style seems to have settled into something whimsical or eerie. My struggles with mental health and people often show up in my poetry. In October 2023, I started writing horror-themed poetry and stories, and I found I really enjoyed it!

Writing helps me quiet the screams in my head. When I write about things people do (or don’t do), I hope someone out there hears what I’m trying to say. Maybe my words will resonate with someone who feels the same way but hasn’t been able to express it.

Interests and Hobbies

Beyond writing, I focus on staying healthy. I enjoy my time in the gym strength training and preparing healthy vegan meals. I’m in better shape now, in my late 50s, than I ever was in my 30s. I also love photography, especially sunrises and sunsets—each one is unique.

I’m a tech enthusiast too. Watching technology evolve rapidly since the late ’60s has been fascinating. I love solving problems with technology, which led to my 40-year career in IT.

They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life, and that’s been true for me.
